Weekly Photo Challenge: Chaos

From Inishmore, Aran Islands.

We generally think of walls as beings of structure and order, but this image shows their hidden chaos.  The stone walls of the Aran Islands are famous for their unique structure and ubiquity; there is so much stone in the ground, the inhabitants had to pile it up somewhere to clear fields.  There are miles and miles of stone walls on the islands, all hand-made without mortar.

This tiny café was crammed with tourists who all found a cheery welcome as well as hearty food and delicious cake.  It was recommended to us by our local minibus guide, and definitely showcases the charm of the Aran Islands.  I loved the traditional thatched roof and the beautiful flower arrangements.  I have never seen so many gorgeous window boxes as in Ireland!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Edge

From Inishmore, Aran Islands.

Dún Aonghasa, or Dun Aengus, is a prehistoric fort built on the edge of a 100m high cliff.  It would have been quite defensible!

I had some better pictures of the cliff edge, but I like this one because of the other random tourist trying to safely get his shot over the edge.  It was a pretty dizzying view.

Some of the ruins from the Seven Churches site, which actually only has two churches, as well as several other buildings and a graveyard.  The ruins probably date from the 8th-15th centuries and were a Roman pilgrimage site.  The yard contains the medieval graves of saints as well as more modern ones of local residents.

I have no idea who these people are, but they held hands on the uneven path down from Dun Aengus fort.  I was just taking a picture of the landscape and happened to catch a commonplace bit of love.  Now I love them, too!
