K-pop MVs (Star Wars Special): 2NE1’s “Follow Me”

We’re finishing out this series with my favorites 2NE1…and a surprising Star Wars cameo!

This is a typical crazy K-pop video, featuring motorcycles, fun dancing, and questionable sartorial decisions (including copious amounts of colored animal print??).

But then at 1:43…we get “Dara Vader” and her stormtroopers (later revealed to be Minzy and CL).  The first time I saw this, I was like WAIT WUT.  2NE1 and Star Wars together…so random, so awesome.

After watching it a few more times, I noticed that at the end of the video (around 2:55), they are all wearing Star Wars baseball caps!  I noticed Minzy’s R2-D2 one first; also, Bom has the stormtrooper, CL has Darth Vader, and Dara has C-3PO.  These hats were sold at the time of the video (2010) by New Era in Japan.  I would have loved to have one!

The members (in the order they start singing):

  • CL (0:02)—leader, main rapper, lead vocalist
  • Bom (0:44)—main vocalist
  • Dara (0:50)—visual, vocalist
  • Minzy (0:55)—main dancer, lead vocalist, lead rapper, maknae

“Main” is ranked higher than “lead” in these positions.  CL is actually not the oldest but simply has the personality to be the leader.  The “maknae” is the baby of the group.  The visual is basically the most attractive member who does promotional activities.

Why did they let Ralph Lauren design the Olympic uniforms again?

I’m a huge Olympics junkie and I can’t wait for the Olympics to get started, with some events (including the new team figure skating) tomorrow.  But I am less excited to see the US athletes in their team uniforms at the Opening Ceremony on Friday.

The last time Ralph Lauren did the team uniforms for the summer 2012 event in London, the athletes came out looking like flight attendants…plus the uniforms were apparently made in China.  So, who thought it was a good idea to let him have another go?

I don’t know, but the results this round are just as bad, if not worse.  Here’s the Gawker article on this topic.

2014olympics

It’s like the 4th of July threw up on an ugly Christmas sweater.  “There’s no giant horse” is about the best thing I can say about it.  Gawker commenter Mrs. Beeton posted this image for comparison:

Yup, looks about right.

There’s plenty of other goodies in the Gawker comments as well, so enjoy.

Existential Crisis in the Shoe Department

Decisions, decisions

I had $30 in Kohl’s Cash and a pair of Chucks with holes in them.

Sometimes I start in the kids’ department when I go shoe shopping.  It’s a technique that those of us with small feet know well: a women’s 5.5 (my size) is about a girl’s 3.5.  The former is nearly impossible to find, the latter much more common (and cheaper!).  But this strategy does tend to limit your options to things like white sandals and Spiderman sneakers.  At my Kohl’s, kids’ Converse only come in boring pink and black.

So, hoping against hope, that day (the day I dragged my husband along with me), I went to the women’s shoes.  I marveled at the long display of rubber-soled canvas.  Red, black, blue, purple.  I have a life-long love of Chucks.  I wore plaid knock-offs for years in elementary school.  I wore green hightops like a badge of honor to emo concerts in college. Emo street cred, heh.

I started checking boxes for my size and found grey with purple piping in a women’s 6; that would do nicely.  I tried them on to check, and they were definitely more comfy than my current navy pair falling to pieces.

I was about ready to walk to the check out when I saw them: Size 6. Sky blue.  My favorite color.  They were beautiful.

This is a dilemma I seldom have; finding 2 pairs of shoes in my size is rare.  I couldn’t justify buying both when I’d counted on the Kohl’s Cash to cover the bulk of the price.

Five years ago, I would have bought the blue with no hesitation.  And that realization hit me in the gut as I sat there with a different color shoe on each foot.  Five years ago, when I was in college.  Do people with full-time jobs and mortgages wear blue shoes?  I’m not in college anymore.  I’m not a teenager.  The grey shoes were less flashy and more…mature.

After sitting for many minutes as I struggled to come to grips with that, I asked my (very patient) husband what he thought.  I wanted him to say, “The blue ones are so you! Your age doesn’t matter! You should wear whatever shoes you want!”

He told me to get the grey ones.  When I ask him these things, he’s always right.  I put both pairs back on the shelf while we finished our other shopping and I could savor the last 15 minutes of the time in my life when I still thought I could wear bright blue Chucks unironically.

Then I bought the grey ones.

And my husband will probably never go shoe shopping with me again.  Maybe if I promise I won’t have a mental breakdown next time?

Other Geekiness

A few other geek notes on this Star Wars weekend:

We saw Iron Man 3 at the drive-in Friday night–perfect weather!  We had a really great time.  The movie was fun, but definitely not up to the standards set by the first Iron Man and The Avengers.  For an action movie, it had great characterization and acting (Ben Kingsley KILLED IT).  The plot was fine, and the action great, but I don’t think it’s a movie I’m going to want to watch again and again.  And the Christmas setting threw me off; I know it’s the director’s “thing,” but it really had no meaningful impact on the story.  The credits were actually really cool, and the after-credit scene was worth staying for, as always.  So overall, I’d recommend this movie for geeks, but if you’re not a Marvel fan, you may want to just skip it.

Also, I just discovered that shirt.woot.com now has a catalog of ALL their past shirts that you can buy from.  I mean, from which you can buy.  Whatever.  Basically, any shirt that you missed previously is now available for $18.  WOOT!  Here is one shirt I’m buying right away–I tried to get it before, but got the wrong size.  Cats + Catan = the perfect shirt for me.  I already have the “Making Bread” cat shirt from the same designer.  Here are some other shirts that I have bought from shirt.woot previously:
