Fan Art Friday: Remembering Leia

Welcome back to our Star Wars coloring book club, where Kiri from Star Wars Anonymous and I color the same image every month to compare and contrast.  We’ve been doing this since 2016 and still haven’t run out of pictures to color!

I just got a new set of colored pencils for Christmas, so I was eager to try out all the new colors.  It was nice to be able to have a different color palette, but I felt like I did a lot of blending to get it to look closer to how I wanted it.  The new pencils are really nice to color with though!

This isn’t the best picture because I had bad lighting and had to do some photo editing to make it look better.  The background is actually shaded with a light blue though it doesn’t show up well here.

ETA: Here is a slightly better picture, though I left the original for posterity 😀

I picked shades of pink and purple for the flowers for a couple reasons.  First, these feminine colors seemed appropriate for Leia here.  Although she didn’t have any agency in choosing this outfit (ugh), Leia does show that it is possible to be feminine and badass at the same time.  Remember, she kills Jabba while wearing this bikini!  Femininity can be powerful.

Second, these flowers look like Forget-me-Nots to me, which can be pink, purple, and blue.  I thought this was also appropriate as a tribute to Leia as well as the actress that played her, Carrie Fisher.  I was so pleased with how they were able to include her character in The Rise of Skywalker in order to give her a fitting send off.  The use of previous footage and visual effects worked so seamlessly, and it was wonderful to see Leia as “Master Skywalker,” even if just for a bit.

Also, check out Kiri’s version that uses the botanical details to reference Queen Amidala’s famous red gown.

I love yours! And I also love that you had bad lighting. It looks so soft and I seriously thought you had painted the background this beautiful pink before starting with the colored pencils.

I’m jealous you got some new ones…I still have my 50 shade set where 5 blues actually are all the same so really I have about 20 colors but repackaged in different ways.

I love, love, love your flowers. They are done excellently! You win!

Haha, looking at it now, it does look pink! That’s gonna bug me, maybe I’ll try to take a better pic in natural lighting.

I only had the Crayola 24 set, and these are some fancy art pencils…I’m a bit intimidated by them haha. So I figured the best way to fix that was to use all of them in this picture! I didn’t quite, but it was close. I was getting bored with the old set and this one definitely has a different palette. But it is missing some things, like a good peach skin color.

So glad you like the flowers!! That was my favorite part!

Hello Mei-Mei, and as I mentioned to Kiri…what a coincidence! I ‘ll explain after I chat about your fantastic image OK? First up I love both images, yours and Kiri’s…they both exude the strength and femininity that Leia/Carrie had. The skin tones look really good on both pics (skin is so hard to colour) and as with Kiri and her choice for the colours used to fill in the flowers yours too has a deeper maybe unintended meaning. It was stated by Carrie that if she ever wielded a lightsaber on screen, that she wanted a PURPLE bladed weapon! How about that for a coincidence (or Force Convergence). Your flowers match the colour of lightsaber Carrie wanted and Kiri’s match the colours of Leia’s mother’s gown! I love these little details…they can have such a big impact on my view of an image!

Now I’ll explain the “coincidence”…well, I just published my tribute to the new weapon for Leia in the Rise of Skywalker. If you or your readers would like to see it I will leave a link below…BUT I will just add a SPOILER ALERT! There may be subtle spoilers for the film in my post, small but still they are there OK?
Thanks for sharing and here is the link if you’d like to see my latest creation…
