Fan Art Friday: Watercolor Mandala

Welcome back to our Star Wars coloring book club, where Kiri at Star Wars Anonymous and I color the same image every month to compare and contrast.  This time Kiri picked the last picture in the book.

When I first looked at this image, the wavy designs reminded me of water and seaweed and Otoh Gunga.  So, I started with a mix of cool colors in light shades for a kind of watercolor effect.

That was when I realized that the designs are the Imperial Guard helmets. Soooo the very bright, very red, very military-esque guards are now represented by nice, soft watercolors.

Oh, well.  I like this one anyways.

Next month, we will do everyone’s favorite Mon Calamari, Admiral Ackbar.

Hi Mei-Mei, as I said to Kiri earlier, I apologise my effort at colouring this page didn’t happen but I had to take care of an elderly relative who has broken their wrist (I’ve had to help look after her and her pets) It looks as if Kiri’s husband also has a better eye than I have, he guessed what the shapes were, I thought they were Niemoidian or Naboo type headdresses. Oh well, stress affected my eyesight. I should be back to form in the next few days so I will colour in the Ackbar image for next month (I actually met Tim Rose/Admiral Ackbar recently at my local comic-con!) Thanks.

Ooooo I like yours a lot! It’s very soothing and calming. You know, I’m not totally convinced that they are the Imperial Guards. Though, if that was my husband’s first guess and he’s not a big fan, then maybe that is what they are! I like For Tyeth’s headdress suggestion. I actually do see that more than the Imperial Guard now when I look at it.

And that’s the great thing about art! It really is interpretive. Though most of the time that frustrates me, I do like it in these instances.

I really thought it was like part of the Bongo sub or something when I was first looking at it! That’s one of the things I love about this book, they do such cool interpretations of SW stuff that it transforms into more than just a SW element.

I wouldn’t have noticed the Imperial helmet bit if you hadn’t pointed it out! XD Anyway, I like the final product a lot. It’s very calming; I think the color palette and the watercolor effect contribute to that feeling.

I think you are right! I didn’t have “calming” as a goal in mind, but I really like how it turned out.
