Fan Art Friday: Meesa Okeyday!

Welcome back to our Star Wars coloring book club, where Kiri at Star Wars Anonymous and I color the same image every month to compare and contrast.

Ok, so somehow this ended up being one of my favorites in a while!  I usually do the character pictures fairly realistically, and I was staring at Jar Jar thinking how boring it was going to be to color him all in various shades of brown when I decided that because Jar Jar is a ridiculous character, I was also going to color him in a ridiculous way.

I don’t hate Jar Jar, and I certainly don’t hate The Phantom Menace (it has its moments), but I would be hard pressed to say the Gungan is a well-written, well-developed, or even particularly interesting character.

So I decided I was going to color him pink.  Varying shades of pink, to be precise.  Then I went with aqua with blue accents for the border to contrast the pink.

Here is it in progress:

There is actually another picture in the book that looks almost exactly like this, just with Jar Jar facing front.  Same border and everything.  Weird.

Check out Kiri’s version here, which is is basically the mature and realistic version of mine haha.  We were on the same wavelength this time for sure, and both of our turned out great.

Next month we’re going more abstract with this mandala:

I love that you decided to go different! It’s really fun. (Fun is my new word lately, can’t you tell?) I also find it interesting when we use similar colors – you used similar colors surrounding him.

I enjoyed doing Jar Jar too and I was surprised by that. It wasn’t too hard to color but it also held my interest (unlike some mandalas).

You know what I realized for the first time doing this? The reasons they have a lot of those swirlies around the pictures is because the swirlies are relaxing to color! I never realized that before. I thought they were just trying to make pictures pretty.

And, yes, I saw the other Jar Jar and was hoping you didn’t mistake it for that one. I’ll have to check out the swirlies and see if it’s the same! I didn’t notice that.

It was very fun! And the swirlies are totally relaxing.
Ours were surprisingly similar this time, and both great! I’m glad this was a winning month for both of us 😀

    Hello Mei-Mei,
The colours in the “swirlies” (I think you may have just come up with a new artistic term there!) I felt represented the Gungan underwater world, almost as if he is poking his snout through the airlock bubble portal! Meesa likin a lot.
p.s. I may have a few pics of interest in my post I’m about to type up.

You’re right, the colors are very reminiscent of Otoh Gunga! I love that Kiri used similar colors!
