Fan Art Friday: Solo

Welcome back to our Star Wars coloring book club, where Kiri at Star Wars Anonymous and I color the same image every month to compare and contrast.

I’m not crazy about how this one turned out, but I don’t hate it either.  I had planned to use colors that remind me of Han Solo: Blue, red, grey, brown, and some yellow.  (Kiri actually had a similar color scheme; check out hers here).

However, then I decided for some reason to throw some green in there, and now it looks like kindergarten primary colors, which is not what I was going for.  I also got bored coloring Vader all dark brown, so I started mixing in light brown and now he’s got a weird ombré thing going on.

But luckily, this image is actually in the book twice, so I’ll get another chance at it someday!

I’m cautiously optimistic about the Solo movie based on the trailers.  I probably won’t get to see it in theaters or anything, but I always enjoy a good heist story.  In fact, if you would like a good heist story with Han and Lando, check out the Legends novel Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn.  I’m lucky enough to have a signed copy! 😀

I LOVED ‘Scoundrels’!!! It had a real ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ vibe and I thought Zahn did a great job with establishing a) why Han didn’t pay Jabba with the money he got from the Rebellion and b) why Han would be having a solo adventure in between ‘A New Hope’ and ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’ For me, after Lucas, no one gets Star Wars better than Timothy Zahn.

Also, I remember the tale of your signed copy and I am still super jealous and totally happy for you :).

I agree, Zahn is the heart of the EU and they are so lucky to have him (and Thrawn) back. Scoundrels was just so much fun! I might have to go re-read it now.

I’ve been (slowly) making my way back through the Expanded Universe, re-reading what I’ve read before and reading for the first time what they’ve added since I stepped away. I’m loving it! I’m almost back up to the ‘Heir to the Empire’ Trilogy and I can’t wait.

My goal is to finally read the WHOLE THING in the next few years. I feel like I owe it to Star Wars and to the ten-year-old version of me who fell in love with the EU ages ago :).

What fun! I can’t claim to have read the WHOLE THING 😉 but I’ve read quite a bit, the good and the bad. You’ll have to give us a report when you’ve finished!

I will! I was debating about doing one post on the whole journey at the end or smaller ones looking at different points on the timeline as I read. We’ll see…

When I was a kid I probably read about thirty to forty of the EU novels. And even the “bad” ones were entertaining in their own way. As my friend Hannah likes to say, we’re EU babies! It will forever shape my vision of Star Wars and it will forever be home :). I just love it.

Thank you! I’ve learned a lot as I’ve been doing these, even if they don’t always turn out like planned 😀

Hi Mei-Mei, I kinda like the colours, the green reminds me of Han’s exploits on Endor (watch out there’s an Ewok!) I was slightly confused why Han had Luke’s ROTJ lightsaber (the part you coloured yellow) until I realised it’s probably the flash suppressor/muzzle of his DL-44 Blaster pistol! But then there are the blaster shaped parts you coloured red so I don’t know.

Haha I really didn’t look closely at this one; I was thinking the lightsaber might be Vader’s, but you are right it’s definitely Luke’s from ROTJ. I like your explanation for the green!
