Welcome back to our Star Wars coloring book club, where Kiri at Star Wars Anonymous and I color the same image every month to compare and contrast.
We meet Amidala as Queen of Naboo in Episode I, and I have always loved her dresses and makeup. So I always enjoy coloring Amidala. I wanted to use the core colors of red, gold, and black from her outfit, which fit the poppies perfectly.
But I also wanted to incorporate other colors. I hit upon using royal blue, mixing blue and purple. Purple has been associated with royalty since Roman times, so I thought it was fitting thematically.
The monarch of Naboo is the head of state for the planet (the governor of Naboo being the head of goverment). It is actually an elected position, and I always thought it was strange that the people of Naboo seemed to frequently elect teenage girls to the position. Amidala was elected at the age of fourteen. In my experience, teenage girls are not always a font of calm and logic, but the queens seem to be the exception to that rule.
Check out Kiri’s version here (and read her thoughts on Amidala’s stoic facade).
Hello Mei-Mei, I have just commented on Kiri’s page and I have to say I love of your efforts with these pictures. I will say that Kiri may have a slight disadvantage as she uses a Third Party site to host her pictures and the linked image appears faded. But if you hover your mouser pointer over the pic it regains it’s proper colours!
Back to your picture I like the inclusion of the purple (it’s my astrological lucky colour apparently). The reds, golds and style of dress were inspired in real life by Korean and Mongolian fashions (in particular wedding gowns). I also directed Kiri to a Star Wars Databank page that discusses Amidala (and Sabe’s) wardrobe and make-up including the Scar of Remembrance lipstick. The link to the page is here:

Thanks for another great picture and I look forward to seeing how you tackle Vader again (and as I told Kiri….face Vader again you must, only then a Jedi will you be…Hehe!)

Hi again, you’re welcome. I originally found out about Naboo fashions and attitudes through my copy of the Visual Dictionary but my copy is in storage at the moment. Luckily the Databank and the Dictionaries seem to share a lot of material and low and behold there was the page I linked you to!

Yes! I think the red dress might be my favorite, but so many pretty outfits.

I agree with Novella; Padme / Queen Amidala had a stunning wardrobe. But that’s an interesting point you made about Naboo frequently electing teenage girls to be their queens. It’s been a long time since I last watched the Star Wars prequel trilogy…
