Welcome back to our Star Wars coloring book club, where Kiri at Star Wars Anonymous and I color the same image every month to compare and contrast.
We’re back after a month off with this interesting picture, which I think is one of the few in the book that combines prequel and OT images. I wasn’t particularly inspired with this one, but I like the way it came out fine. Nothing really exciting.
I knew I wanted it to be heavily red and warm tones, because of Sith lightsabers, and Tatooine, and Anakin’s podracing helmet. I thought using green for the leaves would be too much green, so I did kind of a greenish yellow, as if the leaves were wilting and fading. Kind of fitting for Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side.
Check out Kiri’s beautiful image and her thoughts on Anakin’s transformation here.
Next month we’ll do a portrait of Queen Amidala:
Nice!

Ooo, I like yours! Very different. I liked the concept of the wilting flowers + coloring from Tatooine. Yours is really different and I like that!
I kind of went the opposite route and picked colors that represented life and abundance…I noticed that there was nothing really around Vader, but Anakin had so much and I thought of trying to portray health/life/innocence.
Looking forward to doing Amidala!

That is interesting, that you chose “pre” Anakin to inspire your colors, and I chose “transitional” Anakin for mine. I love the way you interpreted it, with life around young Anakin, and emptiness around Vader.

Hello Mei-Mei, as I commented to Kiri, a great way to jumpstart the Mandala colouring activities! I like your choice of colours too as each compliments the other giving the impression of desert sands (which aren’t always just bright yellow) . Then as both you and Kiri pick up on the absence of any detail or colour surrounding Vader – cold and devoid….more machine than a man, is fantastic. Could Vader’s evil be killing the shoots of growth reaching up to him?
If little Ani was to give his opinion on your series I think he would say, “IT’S WORKING!…IT’S WORKING!”
Can’t wait for next month’s offering.

Love the way you interpret this image! You and Kiri both put a lot of thought into looking at this one. And love the Ani quote haha!

Thanks Mei-Mei, just seeing Ani sat there in his Podracer reminded me of the quote as Qui-Gon provided the Jedi power cell to bring the racer to life. I commented to Kiri I though one of you may have added it yourselves (especially after the R2-D2 mandala “Blob of grease” quote 😀 )
