Fan Art Friday: Black Balloon

I discovered the Goo Goo Dolls after their hit song “Iris,” and was fairly obsessed with them in high school.  They are still among my favorite bands.

I also enjoyed writing “song fics” where I took song lyrics and made fan fiction (or original stories) with them.  This is what I would call a “song sketch,”  where I took the opening lyrics from the Goo Goo Dolls’ song “Black Balloon” and drew an image.  I don’t think there’s a story that goes with it, it’s just an impression I had based on the feeling from the song.  I was also practicing perspective obviously lol.

That brought back music memories. Good music memories. 🙂 I liked the Goo Goo Dolls music a lot, too. Listening to the radio was one of my favorite hobbies when I was in middle and high school, and their songs were playing constantly back then. This song, “Iris,” “Slide,” “Broadway,”… and now when I hear their songs at the grocery story, I get a little nostalgic.

The fan art for the song is cute, btw. I like the anime influence.

“Iris” is my favorite song of theirs, but I think “Slide” might be their best. Definitely some nostalgia there!

Hi Mei-Mei, I think you nailed perspective and you also positioned the “catch-lights” in the eyes and on the balloon correctly. (You also remembered to capture the refraction in the balloon so that the hair looks lighter…great work!)

My high school self says thank you! Those are exactly the kinds of things I was practicing.

You did a good job. My Grandfather was a “Master Craftsman” which in the UK meant he was a qualified artistic painter, carpenter and decorator and I think some of his eye for detail passed down to me, which helped me pick those details out!

I think I was the only person not into the Goo Goo Dolls. They always sounded whiny to me haha. But cute pic!

I keep seeing this new k-pop music that’s taking over and I think of you every time.

Aww, I love the Goo Goo Dolls! I actually haven’t listened to them in a while. I think I need to pull out some of their albums. I remember falling in love with them in high school too. In fact, “Iris” is definitely on my “I awkwardly slow danced with someone to this song” list :). Ahh, the memories! The picture is wonderful too. I love the “song fics/song sketch” idea too. I’ve never heard of anything quite like it but I think it’s really cool.

Yeah, I haven’t kept up with them in recent years but they are still putting out albums! I really love their early stuff that has more of a grunge “garage band” feel. I also listened to Gutterflower and Dizzy Up the Girl on repeat

I’ve bought their last few albums but I don’t find I play them like I did ‘Dizzy Up the Girl’ and ‘Gutteflower.’ But those albums hit me at the right time. I did really like ‘Let Love In’ but I think that one’s a few years old now too.
