From Skellig Michael.
I really liked this picture this week because I see three of the four “traditional” elements represented here.
- Earth: the sea campion and the rocks of Skellig Michael in the foreground and Little Skellig in the distance
- Water: the rough waters of the Atlantic, pushing up against the two islands
- Air: the puffins (Fratercula arctica) that nest on Skellig Michael. You can also see gannets and kittiwakes as little dots flying about in the distance.
My husband saw the image of Little Skellig as a battle between Earth and Water, with the Earth pushing up through the Water, and the Water fighting back, battering the rocks. Β There is definitely something primal about these islands, another connotation with the word “elemental.”
Lovely capture! π

Puffins! π They’re so adorable. I love how brilliantly colored their beaks are.

I loved them! Did you get to see puffins in Iceland, too?

Unfortunately, no.
Puffins don’t start visiting Iceland’s coast until late May. The tourism industry there actually has puffin watching tours and combo puffin & whale watch tours (in addition to whale watches) in the summertime. Something to keep in mind for future visits.

That is a gorgeous picture! I always enjoy your pictured but there are some that so totally pull me in I just wish I was THERE as soon as I look at the picture. This was one of those pictures. Did you happen to find any lightsabers while you were there? You know…in case anyone may’ve left them behind?? I figured it was worth asking about :).

Awesome, I’m so glad you liked this one. No lightsabers of any color spotted, sadly, but I do believe that the upcoming”porgs” will be at least partially based on these puffins π

Okay so “Porgs and Puffins” sounds like the most adorable kid’s show ever!!! I appreciate the insight too. I’ll be sure to keep the puffins in mind as the porgs bounce around the screen some December :).

I love the way you describe the battle between earth and water. So true and I can see it in your photo. And, yeah – stunning photo! This is a good one.

Yay, glad you liked it! I didn’t see the element battle until B pointed it out–I almost always ask his opinion on the weekly photos because he always has such a different perspective from me. I thought it really added to the challenge this week π
