This poor plant was a victim of leafcutter ants. These ants cut off pieces of leaves and bring them back to their nest to use as a substrate for growing fungus, their food source; the ants and fungus have a mutualistic relationship. Leafcutter ants, of which there are many species, also have fascinatingly complex societies.
