Snowy Morning

I hate winter, but I love shoveling snow.  Everyone else in our neighborhood has a snow blower, and I may yet break down and buy one, but this morning B and I enjoyed shoveling all 2000 sq ft or so of our gravel driveway.  (Well, I enjoyed it, I guess I can’t speak for my husband.)

We were pretty much snowed in yesterday, as the county had declared a snow emergency and the plows could not keep up.  Our city is currently conserving salt (which doesn’t work all that well anyway in these very cold temps we’ve been having).

I found a very nice set of deer tracks going across our front yard.  White-tailed deer are extremely common here and eat all my plants.  Unfortunately, coyotes are starting to follow them into more populated areas (haven’t seen any here yet).

I also saw a number of songbirds, including a woodpecker–snow shoveling is a great time for birding because it gives you an excuse to pause and take a break!

I bet my neighbors thought I was crazy, stopping with my driveway half-shoveled to take pictures of the snow!

Oh my goodness, come to Boston where we’ve had a snowstorm every 3-4 days and you won’t like shoveling it. Because I used to be one of those that enjoyed it … until this year. Now that we have over 5 feet of snow – KILL ME. For the first time in my life, my lower back has been giving me twinges of pain and I know it’s because of shoveling heavy, 2-3 feet of snow in one sitting. I would give anything for a storm that only dropped 4-5″ right now.

    That said, nice photos!

Oh, man, I feel for you guys in MA. I think if I lived there, I’d have taken a month of vacation and never left my house. Of course I’d probably run out of food and resort to gnawing my arm off or something. But maybe even that’s preferable to dealing with all that snow and cold.

You have no idea. I just read an article this morning that we have passed our record of the most amount of snowfall in 30 days – 101.6″!! How is that possible?? And, on top of that, the likelihood of this kind of winter ever happening in this region is 1:23,000 years. It’s good to know that maybe I’ll never have to experience one like it again.

We still haven’t broken our most snowiest winter though. That was the 95-96 season and the record is 107″. Super close, but would rather not break it. Let’s get some melting going on! Seriously. The worst of it is that there’s nowhere to put our snow.
